The Classic Puppet Theater of Japan

The puppets are one-half to two-thirds life size and operated by three men dressed in black so as to be "invisible". The lead puppeteer controls the head and right hand of the puppet. If the lead puppeteer is a famous person, his head may be left uncovered and open to view. Another man controls the puppet's left hand. The third man, who ranks the lowest in the team, controls the feet. This is probably the most difficult task because of the uncomfortable positions he must assume in order to operate the feet and stay out of the way of the other two puppeteers.
